John's Island Foundation Awards Grant to Support Moonshot Academy Schools

 05-10-2016

Vero Beach, Florida – The John’s Island Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant toThe Learning Alliance to support the Moonshot Academy elementary schools with tools that will aid them in providing improved literacy instruction.  The grant funds will cover the following:

Pre-K Fundations:  The Fundations program is the building block upon which other reading skills are built.  This direct, explicit, multi-sensory program used to teach reading, writing, spelling and handwriting is built into the school district’s daily literacy block for grades K-2 and will now be expanded to their VPK classrooms.

Swivl Technology:  The Moonshot Academy schools and 20 Collaborative Classrooms are innovative classroom laboratories for creating dynamic, literacy teaching approaches by documenting and reflecting on student’s learning.  The technology enhancements will allow for capturing lesson delivery, as well as on and off campus professional development to encourage self-reflection and the sharing of best practice literacy instruction.

Classroom Libraries:  In order to meet the more rigorous demands of the standards, classroom teachers are being challenged to expose children to deep, rich, meaningful literacy texts.  This grant will allow us to provide 5 new classroom sets of books per grade level that could be shared within the schools.  This would be the first of a multi-year initiative to deepen the resources available to teachers and students.  Importantly, Kurt Wootton, author of “A Reason to Read,” will work with schools to select the appropriate texts.

Barbara Hammond, CEO of The Learning Alliance, said, “Kurt Wooton, Founder of the Arts Literacy Project at Brown University has often spoken about giving kids a “reason to read."  This grant from JIF provides access to inspiring books about ordinary people who did extraordinary things like Jane Goodall, Jacques Cousteau, and Malala.  I have seen the transformational impact on children when books of this caliber combined with a riveting question of inquiry like ‘how can one person make a difference?’  We are ever so thankful to John’s Island Foundation for providing six schools access to rich literature."
