The Learning Alliance among 2019 Quail Valley Charities grant recipients

 

The Learning Alliance (TLA) was one of 36 recipients of grant awards from Quail Valley Charities (QVC) this year. TLA received a $20,000 grant to fund the organization’s Moonshot Institute Workshops.

Each year Quail Valley Charities distributes funds to support the work of local nonprofits with missions centered around children and education. TLA was once again a beneficiary of a $20,000 grant from funds raised during Quail Valley Cup Charity Week.

The grant enables TLA to continue work in the nonprofit's mission to ensure that 90 percent of Indian River County children can read on grade-level by the end of the third-grade.

TLA has developed a systematic approach to combat the underlying issues preventing 44 percent of local children from learning to read. Research shows that children coming to kindergarten not ready to learn are four times more likely to drop out of high school. These children fall further and further behind their peers as they continue through school, widening the gap.

Only 24 percent of children arrive ready for kindergarten in Indian River County. That figure, coupled with a lack of teacher's equipped with the skills and knowledge to address the needs of these children, made TLA realize they needed to provide teachers with the tools and techniques to catch these struggling readers up.

The grant will partially fund Moonshot Institute Workshops, which supports Moonshot Academy afterschool programs, teacher professional development, and Moonshot Practitioner Certification by providing educators with high-level, accelerated, professional development programs featuring the latest research-based teaching practices.

To continue making an impact, it is imperative that TLA equips educators with the tools needed to create a multi-sensory, interdisciplinary, learning environment where students can thrive and grow. Through the Moonshot Institute, teachers are provided with authentic professional development experiences, including social-emotional, foundational and applied literacy models and nurture an atmosphere of support and mentorship.
