The Learning Alliance among 2019 Quail Valley Charities grant recipients

The Learning Alliance (TLA) was one of 36 recipients of grant awards from Quail Valley Charities (QVC) this year. TLA received a $20,000 grant to fund the organization’s Moonshot Institute Workshops.

Each year Quail Valley Charities distributes funds to support the work of local nonprofits with missions centered around children and education. TLA was once again a beneficiary of a $20,000 grant from funds raised during Quail Valley Cup Charity Week.

The grant enables TLA to continue work in the nonprofit's mission to ensure that 90 percent of Indian River County children can read on grade-level by the end of the third-grade.

TLA has developed a systematic approach to combat the underlying issues preventing 44 percent of local children from learning to read. Research shows that children coming to kindergarten not ready to learn are four times more likely to drop out of high school. These children fall further and further behind their peers as they continue through school, widening the gap.

Only 24 percent of children arrive ready for kindergarten in Indian River County. That figure, coupled with a lack of teacher's equipped with the skills and knowledge to address the needs of these children, made TLA realize they needed to provide teachers with the tools and techniques to catch these struggling readers up.

Quail Valley Charities is excited to partner with The Learning Alliance because we feel they make a huge difference for the children in our community,” said Martha Redner, Quail Valley Charities executive director and Quail Valley membership and marketing director.

The grant will partially fund Moonshot Institute Workshops, which supports Moonshot Academy afterschool programs, teacher professional development, and Moonshot Practitioner Certification by providing educators with high-level, accelerated, professional development programs featuring the latest research-based teaching practices.

To continue making an impact, it is imperative that TLA equips educators with the tools needed to create a multi-sensory, interdisciplinary, learning environment where students can thrive and grow. Through the Moonshot Institute, teachers are provided with authentic professional development experiences, including social-emotional, foundational and applied literacy models and nurture an atmosphere of support and mentorship.

Quail Valley is an amazing advocate for early childhood literacy,” said Barbara Hammond, The Learning Alliance CEO and co-founder. “They have graciously given us $20,000 of funding to support our Moonshot Institute workshops and teacher professional development efforts. Wanda Lincoln's leadership there has been incredibly instrumental in helping us refine our work and deliver it in a way that's meaningful to teachers. So, beyond the financial support, the wisdom of Wanda, the leader of Quail Valley Charities, has been deeply appreciated.”
