Connecting community through literacy

The Learning Alliance hosted Jenn Faber, state representative for the Florida Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and the Florida Children’s Council during a circuit of community engagements in Indian River County.

Faber spoke visited the Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative, Early Learning Coalition, and Kindergarten Readiness sites and held intimate discussions with early childhood providers, parents and community partners.

She shared news of the free EduCare texting app that provides support for the parents and caregivers of young children. EduCare sends users between one and four care messages per week per child via text until your child is 4 years old.

This tool is an invaluable tool that enables parents and caregivers to receive timely information based on their child’s age. Information includes everything from tips what to do when your baby is crying and developmental milestones as they grow.

Faber noted the importance of the work The Learning Alliance is doing in Indian River County through the County’s nationally-recognized Moonshot Moment Literacy Movement – working to ensure all children are ready for kindergarten and reading proficiently by the end of third grade!

The Learning Alliance has partnered with the Florida Campaign for Grade-Level Reading through a common belief that proficiency in reading by the end of third grade enables students to shift from learning to read to reading to learn and to master the more complex subject matter they will encounter throughout their educational career.

Recent studies show that about 67 percent of children nationwide – 80 percent of those from low-income families – are not proficient readers by the end of third grade. To combat this national tragedy TLA and its community partners have banded together targeting health, school readiness, attendance, and summer learning, among others, in hopes of creating a better tomorrow by taking a stand for our children today. By uniting an entire community to reimagine education, we are working together to cultivate literate, creative, and compassionate citizens who will improve our world.

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading was launched to reverse the catastrophic trend created by intergenerational poverty by supporting common-sense solutions at the federal, state and local levels.

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career and a life of active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school success and high school graduation: grade-level reading by the end of third grade.
