Stop Summer Slide

What is the SUMMER SLIDE?  The summer slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summermonths when school isn't in session. Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during summer vacation actually slip in reading ability by the time autumn rolls around.

Did you know that students can lose up to two months each year?  This loss becomes cumulative and adds up, with some children being almost two years behind by fifth grade.

We've got you covered!  Check out our interactive map of the Extended Learning Programs provided in our County, to find a program to support your child's learning all summer long!

Did you know...

  • Every summer, low-income youth lose 2-3 months reading while their higher-income peers make slight gains.
  • The losses are cumulative; by 5th grade, students can fall 1 - 2.5 years behind.

It doesn't have to be this way! The summer can be used for catch-up and enrichment growth. Let's keep learning all summer long!

In addition to summer meal sites, our Moonshot Community has the School District of  Indian River County mobile food bus delivering breakfast and lunch directly to our County's children, ages 5 - 18, all summer long!

Interested in keeping kids reading this summer, but need more books?  The Learning Alliance's Moonshot Moment Bookmobile is offering free books to children and grown-ups all summer!  We aim to make Indian River County the leading literacy capital of the nation!
