Who We Are

These Community Groups Have Been Formed to Support the 90% Literacy Goal:

The Moonshot Moment: 90% Literacy by Third Grade is a necessary goal that has been recognized by the community of Indian River County, Florida.  Our supportive group consists of families, schools and community members who support the 90% childhood literacy goal!

We are concerned that an alarming two-thirds of all children nationally are not reaching critical literacy milestones by third grade, because we recognize that third grade is the key transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."

We recognize that literacy is at the heart of economic development and is the single factor that underpins most social issues, with some states even determining the number of jails they will build on third-grade literacy.

We are working together as a community to improve the critical factors to have 90% of our children reading on grade level by the end of third grade. We are working to improve:

1.  Kindergarten readiness.

2.  School attendance.

3.  Teachers trained with research-based techniques to teach reading.

4.  Eliminate summer slide.

We know that this problem requires an entire community and that the process of learning, specifically of learning to read, begins long before children enter school.  We recognize that each day a child misses school, they lose an opportunity to learn and that children lose 25% of their knowledge over the summer break.

We know that schools cannot do it along, and that the future of our community depends on the ability of our rising generation to meet the strong challenges of a technology-based economy.

We are working together to transform the next generation with 90% literacy by third grade!  This is our Moonshot Moment!
